Expert Hand Surgery from
Fellowship-Trained Specialists

Hand surgery is a specialized field requiring fellowship training beyond general orthopedic or plastic surgery residency. At HandSport Surgery Institute, our surgeons focus exclusively on conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and upper extremity—providing a depth of expertise that general orthopedic practices cannot match.

Dr. Mark E. Pruzansky holds three board certifications—Hand Surgery, Orthopedic Sports Medicine, and Orthopedic Surgery—placing him among the top 1.4% of hand surgeons in the United States. Dr. Jason S. Pruzansky completed fellowship training in hand surgery, microsurgery, and traumatology, bringing expertise in complex reconstruction, nerve repair, and arthroscopic techniques.

As one of the country's leading practices for minimally invasive hand surgery, our patients typically experience faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and smaller scars than with conventional open surgery.

Types of Hand Surgery We Perform

The hand is one of the most complex structures in the body, with 27 bones, dozens of joints, and intricate networks of tendons, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels.

Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Over 5,000 procedures performed. Our endoscopic technique uses a half-inch incision, allowing most patients to return to desk work within 1–2 weeks.

Trigger Finger Release

When conservative treatment doesn't resolve painful clicking or locking, a brief outpatient procedure releases the constricted tendon sheath, restoring smooth motion.

Learn more →

Fracture Fixation

Hand and wrist fractures often require surgical fixation. We use minimally invasive and percutaneous techniques when possible, reducing incision size and speeding recovery.

Learn more →

Tendon Repair & Reconstruction

Tendon lacerations from cuts or trauma require surgical repair to restore movement. Dr. Jason Pruzansky has particular expertise in tendon repair techniques.

Learn more →

Nerve Repair & Microsurgery

Operating under magnification to suture nerves less than a millimeter in diameter. We use nerve grafts, conduits, or transfers to restore sensation and motor function.

Learn more →

Arthroscopic Wrist Surgery

Wrist arthroscopy allows diagnosis and treatment of ligament injuries, cartilage damage, and other conditions through tiny incisions—preserving tissue and accelerating recovery.

Learn more →

Joint Replacement

When arthritis has destroyed a joint beyond repair, joint replacement surgery restores function and relieves pain. Dr. Mark Pruzansky trained under pioneers of finger and wrist joint replacement.

Learn more →

Dupuytren's Contracture

Progressive contracture of fingers toward the palm. We offer both open fasciectomy and needle aponeurotomy techniques based on severity and patient preference.

Learn more →

Revision Surgery

When prior hand surgery hasn't resolved a problem—or has created new issues—we evaluate what went wrong and perform corrective procedures when appropriate.

Minimally Invasive Hand Surgery

HandSport Surgery Institute is one of the country's leading practices for minimally invasive hand surgery. Using smaller incisions, specialized instruments, and advanced techniques provides significant advantages over conventional open surgery.

Not every condition is appropriate for minimally invasive surgery. Our surgeons evaluate each case individually and recommend the approach that will produce the best outcome.

Faster Recovery

Smaller incisions heal more quickly, reducing time away from work and activities

Less Post-Operative Pain

Minimally invasive techniques cause less tissue trauma than conventional approaches

Smaller Scars

Incisions of half an inch or less rather than two-inch cuts

Lower Infection Risk

Smaller wounds have lower complication rates

Same-Day Outpatient

Most hand surgeries are same-day; you go home within hours

Why Choose HandSport Surgery Institute?

Unmatched Credentials

Dr. Mark Pruzansky holds three board certifications—a combination held by very few surgeons nationally. Dr. Jason Pruzansky scored in the 100th percentile among all orthopedic residents and is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai. Both are Castle Connolly Top Doctors for 2025.

30+ Years of Experience

Tens of thousands of patients treated. Difficult cases and revision surgeries are regularly referred to our practice from other providers throughout the region.

Kinetic-Chain Diagnosis

Rather than treating only the visible injury, we assess the entire upper extremity—shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand—to identify underlying causes that other providers miss.

Personal, Unhurried Care

Dr. Jason Pruzansky personally treats every patient from initial consultation through all follow-up visits. Musicians and athletes are encouraged to bring instruments for technique assessment.

Hand Surgery FAQs

Not all hand problems require surgery. Many conditions—including carpal tunnel, trigger finger, and tendinitis—often improve with conservative treatment. During your consultation, our surgeons evaluate your condition, discuss all options, and recommend surgery only if it's the most effective path to recovery.
Most hand surgeries are performed under regional anesthesia, which numbs the entire arm. Post-operative discomfort varies but is typically managed with medication and resolves within days to weeks. Our minimally invasive techniques generally cause less pain than conventional open surgery.
Most hand surgeries use regional anesthesia (an arm block) rather than general anesthesia. You may also receive sedation. Regional anesthesia is generally safer and allows faster recovery.
Procedure time varies widely. Trigger finger release takes about 10 minutes. Carpal tunnel release takes 15–20 minutes. Fracture fixation or joint replacement may take 1–2 hours. You'll know the expected duration before your procedure.
Recovery varies by procedure. Carpal tunnel patients often return to light activities within days; full recovery takes 4–6 weeks. Fracture surgery may require 6–12 weeks. Tendon repair typically needs 8–12 weeks of protected healing and therapy.
Many patients benefit from hand therapy—specialized physical or occupational therapy. Our surgeons coordinate with certified hand therapists and personally supervise rehabilitation programs.
Hand surgery is a subspecialty requiring additional fellowship training beyond orthopedic or plastic surgery residency. General orthopedic surgeons may not have specialized training in the complex anatomy of the hand. Our surgeons completed dedicated hand surgery fellowships.
Many patients come to us directly without a referral. Some insurance plans require referrals from a primary care physician—our staff will verify your specific requirements when you call.
Yes. Our surgeons have extensive experience treating musicians, artists, and craftspeople whose livelihoods depend on precise hand function. Bring your instrument to your appointment for technique assessment.
Revision surgery for failed prior procedures is a significant part of our practice. We evaluate what went wrong, discuss realistic expectations, and perform corrective procedures when appropriate. Bring your prior surgical records and imaging.
