Hand Surgeons. One Practice.

HandSport Surgery Institute is home to two of NYC’s most recognized hand surgeons: Dr. Mark E. Pruzansky and Dr. Jason S. Pruzansky. Both are board-certified, fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity specialists providing advanced treatment for hand, wrist, elbow, and nerve conditions at our Park Avenue office on the Upper East Side.

Dr. Mark Pruzansky holds three board certifications—Hand Surgery, Orthopedic Sports Medicine, and Orthopedic Surgery—placing him among an elite 1.4% of hand surgeons nationally. Dr. Jason Pruzansky, trained at Mount Sinai where he scored in the 100th percentile among orthopedic residents, specializes in microsurgical nerve repair, complex wrist ligament reconstruction, and minimally invasive techniques.

Patients come to our Upper East Side practice for fast diagnosis, evidence-based care, and clear communication. We treat everything from carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger to complex fractures, failed prior surgeries, and sports injuries requiring reconstruction. Our office is designed for efficiency—on-site imaging, same-visit splinting, and coordination with local Upper East Side hand therapists.

Hand and Wrist Conditions We Treat

Our Upper East Side hand surgery practice treats the full spectrum of upper extremity conditions—from common problems like carpal tunnel to complex reconstruction and revision surgery.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Nerve Compression

Numbness, tingling, and weakness often indicate carpal tunnel syndrome. We’ve performed over 5,000 carpal tunnel procedures, including endoscopic release allowing return to light activities within days. Not everyone needs surgery—we also offer splinting, activity modification, and steroid injections.

Trigger Finger & Tendonitis

Trigger finger causes painful clicking or locking. De Quervain’s tendinitis creates pain at the thumb side of your wrist. Both conditions often respond to injection therapy—our surgeons can frequently resolve trigger finger with a single cortisone injection, avoiding surgery entirely.

Hand & Wrist Fractures

Wrist fractures, scaphoid fractures, and finger fractures require precise treatment to maximize function and avoid long-term stiffness or arthritis. We use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible and accommodate urgent same-day fracture appointments.

Ligament Injuries & Sports Trauma

Wrist sprains, scapholunate ligament tears, and TFCC injuries often result from falls or sports. Dr. Mark Pruzansky holds a subspecialty certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Dr. Jason Pruzansky has expertise in complex wrist ligament reconstruction, including arthroscopic techniques.

Arthritis of the Hand, Thumb & Wrist

Thumb base arthritis, finger joint arthritis, and wrist arthritis can significantly impact grip strength and daily activities. Treatment ranges from injections to joint reconstruction or replacement surgery, tailored to your activity level and goals.

Nerve & Tendon Lacerations

Cuts to the hand can sever tendons or nerves, requiring surgical repair. Both surgeons are trained in microsurgery. Dr. Jason Pruzansky completed fellowship training specifically in microsurgery. If you have numbness or can’t move a finger after a cut, call immediately.

Ganglion Cysts & Hand Masses

Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps commonly appearing on the wrist or hand. Treatment options include observation, aspiration (draining the cyst), or surgical removal if the cyst recurs or causes symptoms.

Work-Related & Overuse Injuries

Repetitive strain injuries from computer work, typing, and manual labor are common among Upper East Side professionals. We diagnose and treat overuse conditions and advise on ergonomic modifications and occupational therapy.

Advanced Hand Surgery & Nonsurgical Care

Our approach emphasizes accurate diagnosis first, then the least invasive effective treatment. Many hand conditions improve without surgery. When surgery is necessary, we use advanced techniques that minimize recovery time.

Nonsurgical Treatment Options

  • Splinting and bracing — provided on-site during your visit
  • Cortisone and steroid injections — performed by your surgeon, not a technician
  • Hand therapy coordination — with certified hand occupational therapists on the Upper East Side
  • Activity and ergonomic modification — to address underlying causes

Minimally Invasive & Arthroscopic Surgery

Our surgeons are among the country’s leading practitioners of minimally invasive hand surgery. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release uses a small incision and camera guidance, allowing faster recovery than open surgery. Wrist arthroscopy enables diagnosis and treatment of ligament injuries through tiny incisions. These techniques mean less pain, smaller scars, and quicker return to work and activities.

Outpatient Surgery with Regional Anesthesia

Most hand surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis—you go home the same day. We frequently use regional anesthesia (numbing just the arm) rather than general anesthesia, which reduces risk and speeds recovery. Almost all outpatient surgeries are performed at Surgicare of Manhattan and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, which is part of Lenox Hill Hospital. Some complex surgeries are performed at Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai Hospitals.

Microsurgery & Complex Reconstruction

For nerve injuries, tendon lacerations, and complex trauma, our surgeons use microsurgical techniques—operating under magnification to repair structures less than a millimeter in diameter. Dr. Jason Pruzansky completed fellowship training in microsurgery and traumatology. We handle nerve grafting, tendon transfers, and reconstruction that general orthopedic practices refer out.

Revision Surgery for Disappointing Prior Procedures

If you’ve had hand or wrist surgery elsewhere that didn’t resolve your problem or created new issues, we can help. Revision surgery is a significant part of our practice. We evaluate what causes your dissatisfaction, discuss realistic expectations, and perform corrective procedures when appropriate.

Hand Surgeon Upper East Side NYC – FAQs

Hand surgery is a subspecialty requiring additional fellowship training focused exclusively on hand, wrist, and elbow conditions. If you have carpal tunnel, a finger that won’t straighten, a wrist fracture, or numbness in your hand, a fellowship-trained hand surgeon will have deeper expertise than a general orthopedist who treats shoulders, knees, and hips.
Most patients come to us directly without a referral. Some insurance plans require referrals—our staff will verify your specific requirements when you call to schedule.
Yes, many hand conditions improve with nonsurgical treatment—splinting, injections, therapy, or activity modification. We always consider conservative options first and recommend surgery only when it’s the most effective path to recovery.
Endoscopic carpal tunnel release typically allows return to light activities within days and prior activities in 4–6 weeks. Most patients can drive and do desk work within 1–2 weeks. Individual recovery varies based on your job, activities, and how advanced the condition was before surgery.
Most surgeries are performed at Surgicare of Manhattan and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, which is part of Lenox Hill Hospital. Some complex surgeries are performed at Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai Hospitals, where both Dr. Mark Pruzansky and Dr. Jason Pruzansky hold Attending privileges. Both hospitals are convenient to the Upper East Side. Minor procedures may be performed in-office.
Yes, medically necessary hand surgery is typically covered by insurance. Our staff verifies your benefits and handles prior authorization when required. We’ll explain any expected out-of-pocket costs before treatment.
For acute injuries—fractures, deep cuts, sudden numbness or inability to move a finger—seek care immediately. We offer same-day urgent appointments for injuries. Delaying treatment for certain conditions (especially nerve, tendon lacerations, and joint injuries) can affect outcomes.
Bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications, and any prior imaging (X-rays, MRIs). Musicians and athletes should bring instruments or equipment for technique assessment. You can upload imaging files online before your visit.
Yes. We frequently see patients seeking a second opinion before surgery or after disappointing treatment elsewhere. Complex cases and revision surgeries are a significant part of our practice. Bring your prior records and imaging.
In addition to English, our practice accommodates patients in German, Yiddish, Spanish, and French.
